The Paley Fest

How can I describe the wonder that is Paley Fest? I'll attempt to put some words and thoughts together, but I fear they'll fall short.

First I must make my thank yous to Sue, who had the extra ticket. She could have sold it for much much dollars. The word on the street was someone bought one for 1,400 another person in front of me bought her ticket on ebay for $800. Sue, being a huge fan, let me have the ticket for face value. So much, much thanks to Sue.

Thank you to James, from the SoCal Browncoats. He had first grab at the ticket, but graciously allowed me to go stating that I was an uberfan and should get the chance.

I have a full recording, which I'll put up on the Joss'd and Strangely Literal feeds soon.

I'm always struck when I see the actors and Joss together that they seem so much like my friends. Tons of jokes, tons of hilarious moments, ton of goofing around. It really feels like the cast and crew of Buffy Between the Lines. And that's much how the night went.

First the director of the Paley Center spoke and introduced the night. There were hundreds of fans, a lot of people waiting to MAYBE get tickets. There were people camped out last night at 7pm trying to get tickets.

Then Marti came out and introduced OMWF - which we then watched. Now, having attended Clinton's Buffy the Musical, and even the fan showing at Dragon*Con - I was pretty sad with the amount of involvement. Marti said that Joss was out filming (he was doing the new musical that he's doing with Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris - : ).

Everyone had a really hard time with the clip-on mics. So the recording isn't perfect of the panel.

Sarah was very professional, very nice to the fans. She had JUST heard about Buffy issue #12 (apparently right before the panel started). So they discuss it a little. They also talk about Season 8 and Oz.

Insider news apparently Marti, David Fury and some of the other writers are ALSO in Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog. I'm excited.

The cast & crew were David Greenwalt, Amber Benson, Seth Green, Charisma Carpenter, Marti, Emma Caufield, Michelle T, James Marsters, Nicholas Brendon, Sarah Michelle and Joss. And Matt Roush (from TV Guide) moderated.

Also, in the audience - Jane Espenson, David Fury, Tom Lenk, Drew Goddard and a couple other writers I didn't see.

Biggest talkers, Sarah, Joss, Seth Green.

Tabz favorite moment - Emma explaining her motivation when she did her monologue in The Body. And her explaining to a fan her motivation - I'll save it for you listening to the recording, but it's awesome (in my mind, which is twisted).

I also love to hear Emma is a geek (she loves Battlestar Galactica).

Michelle, "they never let me talk when I was 14 too."  And apparently Michelle and I have the same musical tastes.

I was reminded (again) why I love Joss so much. Some of the things that Joss said really inspired me about why we write, why we love this show, and why it resonates so much.

Seth Green is amazing. Watching him while other people talking was fantastic. He really seems to be friends with EVERYONE. And the whole writing crew from Robot Chicken was in the audience. There was some great moments between him and Amber, and him and Charisma (he was between both of them).

There was also this moment where James was talking about how working with professionals on his latest CD made him feel like he was way behind. And Emma pats him on the shoulder (which reminded me of the moment in OMWF).

Matt asked who would be involved in the Buffy musical - Amber, Oz, James, Michelle, David Greenwalt, and Marti all raised their hands.

The sexual innuendos were flying. A lot. These guys really are a lot of fun. Even Sarah joined in and joked along.

Joss was very noncommittal about a lot of things - which intrigued me. Usually he's not so general - which you can read much into or not.

I was sad that Charisma and Emma and Amber and Seth didn't get to talk more. Seth didn't talk much at ALL about the show. But a lot of the conversations centered around the later seasons. James also didn't talk all that much.

All in all it was a very amazing night. I will leave most of the experience to you guys to watch (hopefully when the DVDs come out) and listen to on Joss'd.

Afterwards, the crush of people looking for autographs was too much for me, so I went over and had Jane sign my "Long Way Home" poster. It was so great to see her again. She really is such a delightful person in person. I was annoyed there were a couple people there who were obviously trying to get actors to sign headshots to sell.

Afterwards I hung out with some of the SoCal Browncoats - it was wonderful to meet you all and I look forward to seeing you at another event.

Closing thoughts - Joss is a genius. I know you all know that, but the things he say just make me go Oh. I wish I had a third of his brain (not in the literal zombie eating sense because we all know that zombies don't eat brains). Charisma is gorgeous. I mean very, very gorgeous.

Fans are wonderful, there's always the rude one in the bunch, but on the whole they really feel like family - no matter who it is, if you know that person loves Buffy or Firefly or Angel you feel a bond with them.

It's fun when people know me for being a podcaster. A little surreal, but a lot of fun too.

The ME Day was something very special. As much fun as tonight was I can not even compare it with ME Day because we were so up close and personal with the actors and with Joss. This was really more of a fan thing, where ME felt like a solidarity thing. I was happy when the Paley fest was announcing it's partners and when they said Writers Guild of America a LOT of the audience cheered. Reminded me of our fight for the WGA and how proud we are that it's now over.

Tonight also reminded me of the numerous amount of fans out there. And the tons of fans we still need to reach and tell about Buffy Between the Lines (yeah, I'm a producer, so sue me). So if you know a Buffy fan that hasn't listened to it yet - send it their way.

And the recording: Joss'd Episode #010 - Live Recording from Buffy Reunion This is for Kim - Marti called herself the "not Joss" - I thought you'd appreciate that.

So fabulous that you were able to record the panel. Any chance you provide transcripts of any of your podcasts for those of us whose ears are broken?

I was so intrigued by the "Buffy Between the Lines" concept when you were first casting it, but sad that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it because it was strictly audio.

In any case, thanks for your report of the Paley event!

I'm not sure about the transcript - we've been pretty busy lately!

As far as BBtL, we are going to have all the scripts available if you want to read it. So at least you can read the stories. Currently only episode 1 is available, but the others should be up soon. Just go to http://buffybetweenthelines.com/?page_id=6

They're in PDF form.

There's going to be a DVD???
Mar. 22nd, 2008 05:55 pm (UTC)
Possibly - the Paleyfest has made DVDs possible, but every one on the panel has to agree to the DVD. So they're waiting to see if they have everyone's agreement I guess.

And of course you should listen to Joss'd just 'cuz - we have a lot of fun on that podcast and there's 9 other episodes to listen to. :)
Mar. 23rd, 2008 01:58 am (UTC)
Sounds like a great time! I was under the impression that Joss and SMG had come to really dislike each other, so I'm glad they were willing to get together for this. And of *course* people recognized you!
Mar. 26th, 2008 06:02 am (UTC)
I was too - if they are, they played it very professional.
